How to slow down a car; clutch then brake or brake then clutch?

To slow down a car, the correct sequence to follow depends on whether you are driving a manual or an automatic transmission vehicle.

For a manual transmission car, the ideal sequence is to first depress the clutch pedal, then apply the brakes. Pressing the clutch pedal effectively disengages the engine from the wheels, allowing you to shift gears or bring the vehicle to a stop without stalling the engine. By doing this, you can control your speed and safely slow down the car without putting excessive strain on the brakes.

On the other hand, if you are driving an automatic transmission car, you don't need to worry about pressing the clutch pedal. In this case, you can simply apply the brakes to slow down the vehicle. Most modern automatic transmissions have a torque converter that allows the engine to keep running even if the vehicle comes to a complete stop.

Regardless of the type of car you are driving, it is crucial to remember to use the brakes gradually and smoothly, rather than suddenly slamming on them. Gradual braking helps to maintain control, prevent skidding or wheel lock-up, and ensures the safety of both the driver and other road users.
