The term "hashtag" has become the more colloquially accepted name for the "#" symbol in the context of social media and online communication.


However, the real name for a hashtag (#) is octothorpe.

The octothorpe (#), is used in social media and other platforms to categorize or group content. Its name allegedly combines "octo-" for the eight points and "thorpe" to honor the Bell Labs employee who suggested its use.
